A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
